How to Use Eggs as Dental Hygiene Experiment
Because of
the similarities between tooth enamel and eggshells, we use hard-boiled eggs to demonstrate proper dental
hygiene.
Things needed:
1. hard boiled eggs, preferably with white shells
2. clear plastic cup
3. vinegar
4. coke
Instructions:
1. Fill the cup with vinegar and coke. The vinegar represents the plaque that forms in our mouth.
2. Put a hard-boiled egg in the cup, cover it in a place for up to two days. Remind students periodically about the egg and how not removing the egg from the mixture of vinegar and coke is akin to a person not brushing his/her teeth for two days.
3. Remove the egg after two days. Have the students note how the shell is soft and pitted.
